Last-Second Goal Brings Unbeaten Streak to Two on Cavalry’s Opening Day

BRYAN-COLLEGE STATION, Texas (June 2, 2021) — With the final kick of the match, the Cavalry FC managed to secure a tie with Round Rock SC.

In a competitive back-and-forth featuring multiple lead changes, the Brazos Valley Cavalry FC finished its second-straight 2-2 draw in the 2021 summer season. Wednesday’s match at Edible Field marked the first time the Cavalry and the Rams have ever faced each other in soccer competition, setting the all-time series record at 0-0-1.

The Cavalry FC struck almost immediately, forcing a dominant push up the right sideline. With an assist by midfielder Antoine Recizak in the fourth minute, midfielder David Jara placed a beautiful header into the bottom right corner of the net from just three yards out. Wednesday’s match marked Jara’s second-straight game with a goal. Cavalry FC head coach Gareth Glick said the Houston native has become a foundation for the rest of the team to depend upon in intense moments.

“David has this ability to find pockets of space that separate him from other players,” Glick said. “He creates mismatches for us, and that’s how he’s already snagged two goals for us on the season.”

The Rams knotted things back at one in the 11th minute with a goal in close quarters by midfielder Kenny Brown.

With the score still tied going into the halftime break, Recizak said the Cavalry FC needed to make adjustments if the team wanted to come away on top.

“We just needed to focus on our strengths and use them to exploit their weaker areas,” Recizak said. “Going into the second half, we had confidence and knew we could do what we hoped to.”

The Rams played rough in the second half, earning two yellow cards in the process. Even with the fouls, Round Rock still managed to head in a quick chip shot in the 78th minute.

In the final five seconds of the game’s 90th minute, Recizak and Jara switched their roles from earlier in the night. Jara provided an assist for Recizak to head in the tying goal, and the buzzer sounded to lock in a final score of 2-2. The France native said he is thankful for how his first goal with the team turned out.

“I’m not a tall guy, so I was really scared the ball was going to just go over the goal,” Recizak said. “When I realized I got that equalizer for us, there was a huge moment of both relief and excitement.”

Overall, the Cavalry FC posted impressive stats on the evening, totalling 13 shots along with multiple corner kicks and goalkeeper saves.

The atmosphere at Edible Field was electric Thursday night in the Cavalry FC’s Home Opener. With drumline cadences and trumpet tunes energizing the crowd, fans enjoyed what might have been the first “normal” sporting experience in the Brazos Valley in over a year.

Both Brazos Valley and Round Rock move to a 0-1-2 record on the season. The Cavalry FC next hits the pitch Saturday, June 5 for World Cup Night when they host Houston FC. Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m., and admission is free for children age 13 and younger.

Glick said the team’s season thus far is culminating in what will hopefully be the first victory of the season Saturday night.

“We’re moving in the right direction,” Glick said. “Their performance deserves a win. We learned a lot about our team tonight, and I think that big moment could finally be coming for us this Saturday against Houston.”
