Cavalry Defeat FC Cleburne 8-1

Bryan/College Station, Texas – June 29, 2018 - In a game which they entered as overwhelming favourites, the Brazos Valley Cavalry still had to perform, and they certainly put on a show for the strong crowd at Travis Field.

The boys in red didn’t hang around as they opened up their scoring account via Christian Molina in the third minute, who whipped in a low shot from just outside the box, which was fumbled by FC Cleburne keeper Josh Nieto who could only watch it trickle over the line. After the 13th minute, the Cavalry scored their second. After Nieto punched a corner only as far Billy Jones who passed it through a bunch of Cleburne defenders and through the legs of Nieto into the back of the net.

Then came the moment we’ve all been waiting for. Marcelo Palomino, in his much awaited first appearance of 2018, got his name on the scoresheet. Most of the credit goes toward left-back Carlos Viveros, who blitzed past three Cleburne players to spray the ball across the six-yard box for the younger Palomino brother to slot in his first goal for the Cavalry in his debut. Just a minute before half-time, Thomas Menke finished of a succulent team move. Following brilliant passes from Matt Dorsey and Brandon Guhl, Menke put his laces through it and the ball rocketed into the back of the net.

The woes continued for Cleburne after the break. Two quick Brandon Guhl goals sealed the victory for the hosts. Marcelo provided the skill of the game, via the most exquisite of back-heel flicks, into the path of Guhl who with one touch put it into the bottom corner from seven yards out.

The Cavalry’s seventh was their best. Darrell Johnson fired home a free kick from the left of the box, 25 yards out. The midfield maestro whipped it over the wall and into the left corner, smashing the inside of the post and bouncing into the right netting of the goal. A free-kick nobody at Travis Field tonight will forget in a while.

After Cleburne put one on the scoreboard, courtesy of a Noah Abrams mistake, the Cavalry set about getting Guhl his third. After a number of chances going wide, in the 87th minute Mitchell Cardenas found Guhl with a 30-yard pass, leaving the number nine one on one with the keeper, and he finally stuck it under the despairing dive of Pacheco and got his hat trick and gave the Cavalry an 8-1 victory. This is the biggest victory any team has achieved in the Mid-South Division this year.

The Cavalry have a quick turn around as they face Cleburne on the road at The Depot at Cleburne Station, Tuesday July 3rd at 7.30pm. The Cavalry will not return home until July 13th, when they take on Texas United at Travis Field.
