Cavalry Defeat OKC Energy U23

Oklahoma City, Oklahoma – July 6, 2018 – After a long road trip to Oklahoma City, the Cavalry were up to the task as they defeated OKC Energy U-23 in a matchup that gave the winner a decisive edge in the Mid-South Division race.

The matchup featured the two teams in the best position to win the division based on current standings and remaining games, with both sides knowing the importance of a win. The Cavalry scored the first goal of the matchup when Darrell Johnson scored off a rebound to put the visitors up 1-0. Johnson would play a key part in the second goal for the team, as his assist set up Mason Schuster for a strike to give the Cavalry a 2-0 lead. OKC would not quit as the home side added a goal in first half stoppage time to give the game a 2-1 halftime score in favor of the Cavalry.

The second half began with the Energy keeping up the pressure to force Cavalry keeper Pedro Medrano to make a few saves to keep the Cavalry in front. That momentum would turn in the 59th minute, when Marcelo Palomino drove a beauty of a free kick into the back of the net to give the Cavalry a 3-1 lead, which the Cavalry would hold until the final whistle.

Tonight’s man of the match was Captain Josue Palomino, who provided the team with a steady presence in the midfield all game and limited the chances for the Energy U23. He also was able to contribute on offense with passes that would set up the Cavalry for the attack. His leadership for the full 90 minutes was key in the Cavalry victory.

The Cavalry will play their final road matchup of the 2018 regular season Tuesday, July 20th against Texas United. The Cavalry will not return home until July 13th, when they again take on Texas United at Travis Field.
